Pisa - A brief overview

Dating back to Bronze Age, Pisa is a beautiful city in Italy's Tuscany Region. Settled on the banks of the River Arno, Pisa attracts a lot of tourists. Though it is not deemed as magical as Florence, we must confess that there is definitely more to Pisa than the leaning tower and the cheap souvenir market that surrounds it. And, the fact that dramatics and Italy go a long way with the Shakespearean connection, Pisa is home to Campo Dei Miracoli - the attraction which has the most dramatic setting in the whole of Italy.

Tourist attractions in Pisa

Leaning Tower of Pisa

This is the only attraction, which almost everyone knows about. The 187 feet high structure’s construction began in 1173 as the bell tower of the Pisa cathedral. The tower has a splendid architecture and the ground floor is the most captivating with its decorated blind arcade segmented by columns with their tops done in classical Corinthian style.

After the completion of the two floors, the tower began to lean as half portion of the property on which it rests had weak soil. This led to an abrupt halt to the construction and it lasted about a century. In 1272, the construction resumed but it was stopped again because of the Battle of Meloria. The structure got completed in 1319, the bells were installed in 1372 and out of the 7 bells, the last one was added in 1655.

Duomo

The Cathedral of Milan, known as Duomo, is dedicated to the St Mary of the Nativity. The most interesting fact about this cathedral is the structure. The largest in Italy and fifth largest in the world, it took nearly 6 centuries to complete it. The cathedral’s best feature is its horizontal marble stripe design, which is the finest work of Rayonnant Gothic, a style which was not a common occurrence in Italy at the time of its construction in 1387.
