Basilica of Saint Ambrose
Located in North Italy, Basilica of Saint Ambrose is a church in Milan which was built in 379-386 AD by St Ambrose – who was the Bishop of Milan – which makes it one of the oldest in Milan. Since the place where the church was built was the burial ground to many martyrs which were persecuted during the ‘persecution of Christians’, the place was originally named Basilica Martyrum. Though it is the oldest, Duomo which was constructed later replaced it as the most important Church in Milan. Though St Ambrose has changed a lot over the centuries because of the rework and restoration work that it underwent, it is noted for its Romanesque characteristics which still prevail.
Sforza Castle and its tranquil parks – built in 15th century by the Duke of Milan, Francesco Sforza, on the pre-existing fortification – sits near the center of Milan and is regarded the best ‘go-to’ place if you want some respite from the city’s crowded on-goings. The castle is a treasure trove of all things ancient; you can have a look at its battlements, its underground vaults, and the tunnels through guided tours. Actually built in 1358-70, the original structure was commissioned by Galeazzo II Visconti, and by his successors, the castle was enlarged. In 1447, the castle was destroyed by the Golden Ambrosian Republic, and when Francesco Sforza defeated them in 1450, he began the reconstruction of the castle.
